The Sound Of Music

At legacy hospice we are proud to provide a wholistic approach to our patients and families. We believe the best care touches the mind, body, and soul through clinical, emotional, and spiritual care. Our primary goal is comfort, and music can play a big part in that.
Many of us can associate various songs with memories and experiences from our lives. Music can make us laugh, it can even make us cry, and sometimes it can bring a peace to our anxious hearts. There’s a power in music that can connect to our souls. It has a way of affecting our emotions, whether it’s the soothing melody, the slow beat, or the meaningful lyrics. We truly believe in the healing power of music. It can be a source of comfort in times of turmoil, a way to reduce anxiety in the midst of stress, and a way to help us navigate through our grief with lyrics of encouragement and purpose
At Legacy Hospice we work with a team of talented and compassionate Music therapists. These wonderful people are gifted with an ability to connect with and bring healing comfort to both families and patients. Here are some songs that are commonly requested and might bring comfort to you…
Amazing grace. We’ve all heard this one before, and most likely at a funeral in the past. A reminder of God’s faithfulness and sovereignty and his gift of Amazing Grace. There’s never a dry eye in the house when this song is played.
How Great Thou Art. This song proclaims God’s mighty power, his sacrificial heart, and how he will welcome us home to Heaven with open arms one day.
Be Not Afraid. The title speaks for itself. In this song we are told to Be not afraid for God Is with us and promises to give us rest. When we walk through the waters of life, he wont let us drown, and is always present in the midst of the storms of life.
On Eagles Wings. A common song used for memorials and funeral, this song reminds us that God will protect us and guide us through all the days of our lives. He will “make you shine like the sun and hold you in the palm of his hand,” no matter what.
What a Friend we Have in Jesus. One of our patients found great comfort in this gospel song. Despite her memory loss, she always found a sense of peace and joy when singing the lyrics: “Can we find a friend so faithful? Who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness. Take it to the Lord in prayer”

Great is Thy Faithfulness. This speaks of life’s ups and downs and how faithful God is, even on our worse days. A great comfort during any tragedy.
Tears in Heaven. A reminder that it’s okay to cry, and embrace the grief that comes with loss.
Let it Be. This classic by the Beatles, has a simple message. The lyrics state: “In my darkest hour, she is standing right in front of me, Speaking words of wisdom, Let It Be.” It’s the aural equivalent of someone putting their arm around you and saying it’ll be okay.
Be Here Long. This masterpiece echoes the feelings of someone who doesn’t have much time to spend with a loved one. “Close my eyes and think of you, Go to sleep and dream of you, We don’t get to be here long.” This reminds us that time is short and this song captures how the time left with that person must be cherished.
Let us harness the power of music together and may we find peace today.
